Qatar to Host IMO World Maritime Day Parallel Event in 2028
Shipping Arabia, July 12, 2026 – Qatar will host the International Maritime Organization’s World Maritime Day Parallel Event in 2028, following approval by the IMO Council during its 137th session, held from July 6 to 10.
The selection reflects growing international recognition of Qatar’s role in the global maritime sector and its commitment to advancing cooperation, knowledge exchange and innovation across maritime transport.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Saud Al-Thani, Qatar’s ambassador to the United Kingdom and permanent representative to the IMO, said the support of member states demonstrated confidence in Qatar’s contribution to international shipping and maritime affairs.
He said Doha would work closely with the IMO Secretariat and member states to deliver an event aligned with the organization’s priorities in maritime safety, sustainability and innovation.
The 2028 gathering is expected to bring together government officials, maritime authorities, shipping executives and industry experts to discuss the future of the sector and the principal challenges affecting global maritime transport.
The World Maritime Day Parallel Event is among the IMO’s leading international forums and is organized in cooperation with a host country. It provides a platform for dialogue on maritime policy, safety, environmental performance, technological development and the role of shipping in global trade and economic growth.
Qatar’s selection also highlights its expanding position within the international maritime community and its efforts to support initiatives aimed at improving the efficiency, resilience and sustainability of the global shipping industry.
The event is expected to strengthen cooperation between participating countries and provide an opportunity to exchange experience on the policies, technologies and operational practices shaping the next phase of maritime development.
