Egypt Advances Maritime Priorities at IMO Council’s 137th Session
Shipping Arabia, July 12, 2026 – Egypt has continued its active participation in the 137th session of the International Maritime Organization Council in London, advancing proposals on Arabic-language access to IMO systems and the protection of international shipping routes.
The Egyptian delegation is headed by the deputy minister of transport for maritime transport and chairman of the Maritime Transport and Logistics Sector, alongside Egypt’s permanent representative to the IMO.
During the session, the delegation contributed to discussions across several agenda items, emphasizing the importance of transparency, equitable geographical representation within the IMO Secretariat, human resources development and greater multilingualism across the organization.
Egypt said broader language accessibility would support more inclusive participation by member states and better reflect the IMO’s global role in regulating international shipping.
The delegation also expressed Egypt’s full support for Qatar’s bid to host the World Maritime Day Parallel Event in 2028, which was approved by the IMO Council during the session.
Two submissions presented by Egypt are scheduled for discussion as part of the council’s agenda.
The first calls for Arabic-language support within the IMO’s Global Integrated Shipping Information System, or GISIS, to improve accessibility for Arab states and expand their use of the platform’s regulatory and operational services.
The second addresses the protection of international shipping lanes, focusing on maritime security, navigational safety and the uninterrupted movement of global trade and supply chains amid continuing geopolitical and operational challenges.
Egypt’s participation reflects its efforts to contribute to international maritime policymaking and advance practical initiatives supporting safer, more secure and sustainable shipping at the regional and global levels.
