Morocco Ranks Among Africa’s 10 Largest Merchant Fleets
Shipping Arabia, July 13, 2026 – Morocco has ranked among Africa’s 10 largest merchant fleets, supported by the scale of its port infrastructure, international connectivity and expanding role in global trade and logistics.
The country placed 10th in Africa and 72nd globally, with a merchant fleet of about 94 vessels, according to a recent ranking published by The African Exponent and cited by CNN.
While Morocco’s fleet remains relatively modest in size, its broader maritime position is underpinned by an extensive logistics network and one of Africa’s most developed port systems.
The country recorded $120.9 billion in merchandise trade and $42.3 billion in transport services trade, highlighting the close integration of its shipping and logistics sectors with international markets.
Moroccan ports handled about 9.96 million twenty-foot equivalent units in 2024, the highest container throughput among the African countries included in the ranking.
Tanger Med remains central to the country’s maritime and logistics strategy, connecting Morocco with more than 180 ports across over 70 countries.
The port complex also supports an industrial ecosystem of more than 1,400 companies, reinforcing Morocco’s position as a major manufacturing, trade and logistics platform linking Africa with Europe and global markets.
The figures highlight how port connectivity, cargo volumes and industrial integration can extend a country’s maritime influence beyond the size of its nationally controlled merchant fleet.
