  • Port of Tripoli Launches Review and Update of Tripoli–Abboudieh Railway Study

Shipping Arabia, October 7, 2026 – The Port of Tripoli has launched the review and update of the Tripoli–Abboudieh railway study, bringing together the Railway and Public Transport Authority (OCFTC) and appointed consultant Rafic Khoury & Partners for the project’s kick-off meeting and to establish a roadmap for the coming months.

The meeting formally initiated work on the railway study and set out the main technical, planning and implementation-related areas that will be addressed. The project will examine the existing studies and designs while identifying the work required to update them and move the railway toward implementation.

Tripoli–Abboudieh Railway Study Enters Review Phase

Discussions covered technical and field surveys, feasibility and demand assessment, infrastructure requirements and the preparation of updated designs.

The review will also include cost estimates and the preparation of the technical and tender documentation required for subsequent stages of the project.

Participants placed particular emphasis on accelerating key deliverables. They also discussed advancing different workstreams in parallel wherever technically possible to support progress over the coming months.

    Port Integration and Cross-Border Connectivity

A key component of the Tripoli–Abboudieh railway study will be an assessment of how the railway could integrate with the Port of Tripoli.

The project will also examine cross-border connectivity with Syria and the railway’s potential to serve strategic cargo flows and wider regional markets.

These elements place the port and its hinterland connections at the center of the study, with the railway being assessed as part of a broader multimodal transport network linking maritime and inland infrastructure.

    Supporting Tripoli’s Multimodal Connectivity

The Port of Tripoli described the Tripoli–Abboudieh railway as a key component of a wider vision to strengthen multimodal connectivity.

According to the port, the project is also intended to reinforce Tripoli’s role as a strategic maritime and logistics gateway for Lebanon and the wider region.

The kick-off meeting establishes the framework for reviewing the existing railway plans and developing the updated technical, commercial and tender documentation needed to advance the project.
