Egypt Hosts Seminar on Women’s Health and Safety in the Maritime Workplace
Shipping Arabia, July 13, 2026 – The Egyptian national branch of the Arab Women in Maritime Association, in cooperation with the Egyptian Yacht Club, organized a specialized seminar on women’s health and safety in the maritime workplace to mark the Day of the Seafarer.
The event brought together senior officials from Egypt’s maritime transport sector, the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, port authorities, maritime institutions and industry specialists.
Attendees included Rear Adm. Sherif Zakaria, deputy head of the Maritime Transport and Logistics Sector for maritime transport affairs, representing Rear Adm. Hussein El-Geziry, head of the Maritime Transport and Logistics Sector; Wael Afifi, director of the Office of the Minister of Maritime Transport and Logistics; Mario Pasqual, consul of Italy in Alexandria; and Rear Adm. Amr Abdel Razek, director of public relations, representing Rear Adm. Ehab Salah, chairman of the Alexandria Port Authority.
Sherine Mohamed Galal Mounir, director of the General Secretariat of the Arab Women in Maritime Association, also attended alongside maritime executives and representatives of relevant organizations.
The seminar focused on creating safer and healthier working environments for women and expanding their participation across maritime professions in line with Egypt’s national priorities and the International Maritime Organization’s efforts to advance gender equality in shipping.
Prof. Hisham Ayoub, Dr. Mervat El-Sayed and Dr. Sherine Youssef delivered specialized presentations on preventive health, occupational safety and the role of technology and artificial intelligence in supporting women working in the maritime sector.
Marwa Hafez, chair of the association’s Egyptian national branch, said the Day of the Seafarer offered an opportunity to recognize the contribution of seafarers while highlighting the health, safety and professional development of women in maritime employment.
The event also honored several Egyptian ports and maritime authorities for supporting women’s empowerment and more inclusive workplaces, as well as the wives of seafarers who died in the line of duty.
The seminar concluded with a commitment to continue cooperation between the Egyptian Yacht Club, the association and maritime stakeholders on awareness, training and occupational safety initiatives.
