Damietta Port Posts Record 46.4 Million Tonnes of Cargo Throughput
Shipping Arabia, July 14, 2026 – Damietta Port handled a record 46.4 million tonnes of cargo during the 2025-26 financial year, the highest annual volume since the Egyptian Mediterranean gateway began operations in 1986.
Throughput increased 5% from 44.2 million tonnes in the previous financial year, reflecting continued growth in vessel traffic and cargo-handling activity, Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir said.
The port received 3,261 vessel calls during the year, up about 1% from 3,221 calls in 2024-25.
General cargo volumes rose 6% to 31.6 million tonnes from 29.7 million tonnes, while containerized cargo increased 3% to 14.8 million tonnes from 14.4 million tonnes.
El-Wazir said the results reflected the impact of ongoing infrastructure, equipment and operational development at Damietta Port as part of Egypt’s wider strategy to strengthen its position as a regional transport, logistics and transit trade hub.
The development program forms part of government efforts to raise the efficiency and competitiveness of Egyptian ports and expand their capacity to accommodate growth in regional and international trade.
Rear Adm. Tarek Adly Abdullah, chairman of the Damietta Port Authority, said the record performance demonstrated the effectiveness of the port’s modernization program, higher operating efficiency and stronger coordination among the authorities and companies working across the port community.
He said maintaining the current growth trajectory would require continued investment in operating systems, maritime and logistics services, workforce capabilities and service quality.
Recent improvements at Damietta have included upgrades to port infrastructure and superstructure, modernization of operating systems and measures to improve cargo-handling productivity.
The port authority said closer coordination among its departments, terminal operators and service providers had supported higher throughput and strengthened Damietta’s ability to attract additional shipping lines and cargo flows.
Located on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast, Damietta Port is a key gateway for domestic, regional and international trade and an important component of the country’s plan to develop an integrated maritime and logistics network.
