Saudi Arabia Reinforces Maritime Ambitions at 137th IMO Council Session

Shipping Arabia, July 15, 2026 – Saudi Arabia highlighted its expanding role in international maritime affairs during the 137th session of the International Maritime Organization Council in London, participating in strategic discussions on the future of maritime transport while advancing cooperation with global partners.

The Kingdom’s delegation was led by Transport General Authority President Fawaz Al-Sahli and took part in discussions addressing key issues affecting the international maritime sector. The participation also included a series of bilateral meetings focused on strengthening cooperation, exchanging expertise and presenting Saudi Arabia’s progress in developing its maritime industry.

During the session, the delegation emphasized the importance of maritime safety and security, compliance with international conventions and continued collaboration in the development of global maritime policies.

Saudi Arabia also showcased initiatives undertaken to advance the maritime sector under Saudi Vision 2030, which seeks to strengthen the Kingdom’s position as a global logistics hub by expanding transport connectivity, improving sector competitiveness and developing an integrated logistics ecosystem.

Participation in the council session forms part of the Kingdom’s broader engagement with the IMO and international maritime community. Saudi Arabia has increasingly sought to contribute to discussions shaping the global regulatory environment while supporting cooperation on maritime safety, sustainable transport and the resilience of international trade.

The IMO Council serves as the organization’s executive body and is responsible for supervising its work between sessions of the IMO Assembly. Its deliberations cover strategic, administrative and policy matters affecting international shipping and maritime governance.

Through its participation, Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its commitment to supporting international maritime cooperation and contributing to the development of policies that promote safe, secure and efficient shipping, while reinforcing the Kingdom’s growing role in global maritime transport and logistics.
