Egypt Warns Seafarers Over Ship Assignments to High-Risk Areas
Shipping Arabia, July 16, 2026 – The Egyptian Authority for Maritime Safety has urged Egyptian seafarers to exercise heightened caution before accepting employment or sailing aboard vessels bound for high-risk waters and conflict-affected areas amid continuing geopolitical and security developments.
The warning, issued under Circular No. 7 of 2026, cited the potential risks that current security conditions in several maritime regions could pose to seafarers, vessels and the safety of navigation.
The authority advised seafarers to obtain a clear understanding of prevailing security conditions before joining a vessel operating in or transiting high-risk areas.
Seafarers were also urged to review security risk assessments prepared by the vessel operator, comply with applicable maritime safety and security procedures, and follow measures adopted under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, or SOLAS, and the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code.
The authority emphasized the importance of complying with the master’s instructions and the vessel’s approved ship security plan, as well as immediately reporting any threat or condition that could affect the safety of the crew or vessel.
Shipping companies, shipowners and vessel managers were also called on to comply with relevant international conventions, conduct continuous security risk assessments and implement approved preventive measures and industry best practices.
The authority said operational decisions involving high-risk maritime areas should prioritize the protection of life and vessel security while remaining consistent with international safety and security requirements.
The advisory forms part of the authority’s regulatory and oversight responsibilities and its efforts to strengthen the safety and security of Egyptian seafarers amid evolving risks affecting international shipping.
