  • APM Terminals Bahrain Wins Environmental Award as Port Decarbonization Project Offsets 100% of 2026 Operational Emissions

Shipping Arabia, October 23, 2026 – APM Terminals Bahrain has received the Al Bilad Environmental Excellence Award, recognizing its progress in implementing sustainable practices and reducing emissions across its port operations. The award follows significant results from the APM Terminals Bahrain decarbonization project at Khalifa Bin Salman Port (KBSP), which has offset 100% of the terminal’s operational carbon emissions year-to-date in 2026.

The achievement marks an improvement from 2025, when the project offset 71% of the terminal’s operational carbon emissions. According to the company, the initiative has also strengthened operational reliability and cost resilience while supporting a lower-carbon operating model.

The recognition highlights the company’s ongoing efforts to integrate environmental sustainability into its operations through initiatives that deliver measurable emissions reductions, clean energy generation and financial benefits.

APM Terminals Bahrain Decarbonization Project Generates 32.8 GWh of Clean Energy

Since becoming operational in August 2024, the decarbonization project at Khalifa Bin Salman Port has generated a total of 32.8 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean energy.

Of this amount, 10.1 GWh has been exported to Bahrain’s national electricity grid and credited by the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA). The figures reflect the project’s contribution to clean energy generation beyond the terminal’s own operations.

The initiative has reduced the port’s dependence on conventional electricity, supporting a lower-carbon operating model. At the same time, APM Terminals Bahrain reports that the project has strengthened cost resilience and operational reliability.

Beyond its environmental benefits, the project delivers approximately USD 1 million in annual savings. These financial results accompany the reductions in operational carbon emissions reported by the terminal operator.

The project offset 71% of the terminal’s operational carbon emissions during 2025. Its reported performance improved further in 2026, reaching a 100% offset of operational emissions year-to-date.

Together, the energy generation, emissions offset and annual savings figures demonstrate the results achieved by the company’s decarbonization initiative since its launch in August 2024.

Environmental Excellence Award Recognizes Sustainability Progress

The Al Bilad Environmental Excellence Award recognizes APM Terminals Bahrain’s efforts to embed sustainable practices across its operations and improve environmental performance.

Matthew (Matt) Luckhurst, Managing Director of APM Terminals Bahrain, described the recognition as an important achievement in the company’s sustainability journey.

“This recognition marks an important milestone in our journey to further embed sustainability across our operations,” Luckhurst said.

He added that the award reflects the commitment of the company’s teams to implementing initiatives and solutions that enhance environmental performance, support sustainable development goals and create long-term value for Bahrain and the wider region.

The award comes as APM Terminals Bahrain continues to report measurable results from its decarbonization project at Khalifa Bin Salman Port. Its achievements in clean energy generation, operational emissions offsets and cost savings form the basis of the environmental progress recognized by the award.
