Jordan Names New Maritime Commission Chief Amid Push to Strengthen Sector Governance
Shipping Arabia, July 15, 2026 – Jordan has named maritime law and security specialist Ahmad Mohammad Ali Al-Assasleh as director general of the Jordan Maritime Commission, as the Kingdom continues efforts to strengthen maritime governance, regulatory oversight and institutional performance across the sector.
Al-Assasleh took the legal oath before Transport Minister Nidal Qatamin at the ministry’s headquarters in Amman following royal approval of the Cabinet decision appointing him to the post.
The Jordan Maritime Commission is responsible for regulating and developing maritime transport activities in the Kingdom, overseeing maritime safety and compliance, and supporting the efficiency of marine services within Jordan’s wider transport and logistics system.
Al-Assasleh brings a combination of academic specialization and operational experience in maritime law, security and international regulatory affairs.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in maritime and military sciences from King Fahd Naval College, a master’s degree in international maritime legislation from Malta and a master’s degree in international maritime law from the International Maritime Law Institute. He is also pursuing a doctorate in international maritime law at the institute.
His professional background includes work in maritime security operations and training with the Combined Maritime Forces in Bahrain, as well as planning and regional coordination responsibilities covering the Middle East and Arabian Gulf.
He has also completed specialized training through several national and international institutions, including the U.S. Coast Guard, NATO training centers, HMS Collingwood in the United Kingdom and the Jordan Armed Forces.
The International Maritime Law Institute congratulated Al-Assasleh, one of its Jordanian graduates, on the appointment and wished him success in his new position.
His appointment comes as Jordan seeks to further develop its maritime regulatory framework, enhance safety and environmental protection, strengthen compliance with international conventions and expand cooperation with regional and international maritime organizations.
Al-Assasleh expressed appreciation for the royal confidence and affirmed his commitment to advancing the commission’s performance, strengthening coordination with relevant stakeholders and supporting the continued development of Jordan’s maritime transport sector.
