Indirect Transit Traffic Grows Through Damietta-Trieste Ro-Ro Corridor
Shipping Arabia, July 18, 2026 – Indirect transit traffic through Damietta Port is continuing to expand as more European cargo moves through Egypt on the Damietta-Trieste ro-ro service before being transferred to Gulf markets.
The port recently handled a new shipment comprising 77 units with a combined weight of about 1,458 tons. The cargo included baby food, dairy products, other food items, medical and pharmaceutical products, and electrical goods.
After arriving from Europe through the Italian port of Trieste, the shipment was prepared for onward transport by road to Safaga Port. It will then continue across the Red Sea to several Gulf countries.
The operation was coordinated by the Damietta Port Authority, Pan Marine Group, which operates the ro-ro service, the Damietta Customs Central Administration’s transit department and other relevant port agencies.
According to the port authority, the required operational and customs procedures were completed efficiently, supporting the rapid handling of the units and the smooth movement of cargo through the port.
The continued flow of shipments highlights the growing use of Egypt’s indirect transit system, which enables European cargo to reach Gulf markets through a combination of Mediterranean ro-ro transport, domestic road haulage and Red Sea shipping.
The corridor offers an alternative logistics route linking Europe and the Arabian Gulf through Egyptian ports, with procedural facilitation and coordinated handling aimed at reducing transit times and improving supply chain efficiency.
Rising cargo volumes through the service also reflect increased confidence in Damietta Port’s operational and logistics capabilities, supported by modern infrastructure and digital systems designed to improve processing speed and accuracy.
Damietta Port said it would continue working to maximize the potential of the ro-ro service, strengthen trade connectivity between Europe and the Gulf and reinforce its position as a regional logistics and transit hub.
